Family Portraits

I have not shot many portraits recently as i've been concentrating on my food and drinks photography, but I wanted to post some portraits of my nephew and two nieces. I took these on a recent trip to Guernsey in July, hanging out on the islands beautiful coastline is always a treat and for those who have not been to the island I recommend you visit.

India - Part 4 Kolkata (West Bengal)

From the mellow beachside shennanigans in Goa it was time to witness some chaos and city life so it was off to Kolkata in West Bengal to stay with some friends. The taxi journey from the airport to my friends house was an eye opener, taxi had more holes in it than a colander so a view of the road beneath rushing past was new to me. Also the lack of suspension was testing my spine out but it was a brilliant experience, this was the view looking out through the front of the cab, notice the good luck charm hanging from the mirror consisting of limes and chillies. These can be seen in most vehicles around these parts, and with the driving in India I felt the charm was needed.

If only we were so bold with our colour palettes. C'mon people lets follow India and go crazy with colour, it lifts the mood trust me.

Kushti wrestlers practicing their art just behind the flower markets alongside the ghats. Was getting a flintstones vibe of these guys, I think it was their clubs. Traditional Indian wrestling isn't just a sport - it's an ancient subculture where wrestlers live and train together and follow strict rules on everything from what they can eat to what they can do in their spare time. Drinking, smoking and even sex are off limits. The focus is on living a pure life, building strength and honing their wrestling skills.

India - Part 3 Kovalam (Kerala) & Goa (Palolem)

Having spent two solid weeks travelling into the beautiful mountains around Munnar and Periyar it was time to get back to the coast in Kerala. Seafood I was missing, and the sea breeze which helped a bit with the stifling heat and humidity.

Kovalam was the next stop and I was looking forward to heading down to the beachside restaurants to see what the catch of the day was. Here are some images from first up Kovalam beach.

Slapping the water is to drive the fish into the back of the net as they are dragged onto the beach, it stops the fish escaping out of the sides and front of the nets. This was done very energetically and soulfully with chanting, singing and laughing.

Puffer fish found washed up on the beach, apparently they take a few hours to deflate. Incredible looking creatures they are, glad I didn't step on it.

These guys spend hours on end diving for muscles off the headland rocks for not much glory, very persistent doing this every morning for a small haul of muscles.

After a week around Kovalam I decided to check out Goa before I headed up north to visit a friend in Kolkata. Palolem beach was one that a few people had mentioned to me so thats where I headed.

Wheadon's Gin shoot - Guernsey

I have been working with a Gin maker in Guernsey called Wheadon's gin, they are a small company but growing rapidly into a big hitter in the gin world. Distiller Luke Wheadon wanted me to shoot a series of images to use for their marketing campaign, here are some product shots along with shots of the Willy Wonka style still called 'Old Nick', named after Luke's Father.

The still is German made by https://brennereianlagen.de/

India - Part 1 Chennai/Pondicherry (Tamil Nadu)

I had the pleasure of visiting India for the first time this year and it was everything I imagined and more. I had wanted to go for many years but not got around to going, finally I decided to just go for it and I have to say it truly is magical in every sense of the word.

It is an explosion of the senses, bright vivid colours, incredible smells mostly good but some bad (say no more). Incredible noise, intense traffic and horns in the manic cities to the beautiful sounds of birds and wildlife in the forests and mountains, and on the glorious coastline.

The people of India are fantastic, and the food, oh the food is one of the main reasons I went to India. Being a food photographer and general food and big time curry lover I was in seventh heaven.

Here are some images from the first part of my adventure starting in Tamil Nadu.
